Meatbags, an independent Solana NFT project, is still working on their mission to purchase a Cold War-era nuclear bunker in Rutland, England. They intend to bankroll this ambitious acquisition by selling 100,000 digital collectibles. The campaign, called “#buythebunker,” seeks to raise about $1.4 million to purchase and renovate the historic bunker. Cold War tensions were at their most fevered when the bunker was built in 1960. Decommissioned in 1968, it now sits on 1.4 acres of land located on a former reservoir.
The sale of the bunker is set to wrap up just before the commercial property auction on April 24th. Meatbags has promised an audacious redemptive arc. Like ConstitutionDAO, they’ll refund participants if they fail to acquire the bunker or identify another site within six months.
Bunker Details and Auction Information
SDL Property Auctions have scheduled the auction of the property with a guide price of £650,000 (about $862,257). The bunker has potential for a two-floor conversion with "cathedral-type ceilings" and a large glass frontage offering views of the Leicestershire countryside.
According to Meatbags, he has indeed spoken with the auctioneers, who seem fairly receptive to the NFT collective’s future role in the bidding process. Expect to see further ongoing tension as this auction is scheduled for later this month.
NFT Structure and Community Involvement
Existing Meatbags holders will receive 10,000 of the new NFTs through a 1:1 airdrop, while the remaining 90,000 will be available to the public. Each NFT will transform on April 28 into one of 20 unique parts across four rarity tiers: Common, Uncommon, Rare, or Epic.
Provided exclusive membership to the “Billionaire Bunker Club” for all NFT holders. If the purchase goes through, this decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) will then use the purchase to vote on future use of the bunker. This unique structure is designed to provide the community with a direct voice in the future use of the bunker.
“We’re giving Doomsday Preppers around the world a chance to reserve their slice of the Billionaire Bunker Club—a Cold War artifact and the first historic site ever fractionalized into a fully decentralized, community-governed real-world asset on-chain.” - MEATBAGS (@mfmeatbags)
Future Plans for the Bunker
Robert, the co-founder of Dead Bruv, is considering many routes for what to do with the bunker moving forward. He promised to make a decision as soon as possible. While some of these ideas are more practical than others, they show an ambitious, creative vision for the property.
Dead Bruv is considering using the bunker as a "members-only survival resort with Doomsday DJ," a venue for end-of-the-world festivals, or a unique Airbnb offering "caviar tastings and canned bean room service." The development hopes to juxtapose the past’s importance with today’s entertainment and lodging innovative ideas.
“I guess the idea would be to be able to have people come to the property, stay on it. Either I think it will turn into a tourist attraction, or I think it could also go down the route of being an insane property on Airbnb,” - Robert
